Vidi Gallery presents In the Midst of Countless Beginnings, a two-person exhibition featuring Daum Kim and Sangbin Im, from October 24 to November 17. Working with distinct visual languages, the two artists explore the possibilities and transformations that emerge through the interplay of chance and order, the singular and the plural. Through their paintings, the exhibition invites viewers to look beyond the familiar and discover new possibilities within a constantly changing world.
Kim explores the coexistence of unpredictability and repetition within the pictorial space. Through the flow and drying of paint, layers of color emerge in forms shaped by material conditions such as gravity, viscosity, and time. While these processes produce unpredictable results, the artist introduces a contrasting sense of order through the repetition of geometric forms arranged at regular intervals. In Today Tomorrow, these two visual structures reflect the relationship between an uncertain future and the recurring rhythms of everyday life. The work reveals how the unknown and the familiar, chance and order, coexist within the experience of time.
Im focuses on the infinite possibilities inherent in a single stroke. For the artist, a stroke is both a trace of bodily movement and an event in which intention and chance converge. Through encounters and interactions with other strokes, each mark transforms into unexpected forms and opens up new visual worlds. This exploration is rooted in Hwahwaek (畵劃, Painting Strokes), a concept in which one stroke encompasses myriad strokes, and myriad strokes come together to form one. The five concepts presented in the exhibition—Ilhwaek (一劃, One Stroke), Ihwaek (二劃, Two Strokes), Dahwaek (多劃, Strokes), Naehwaek (內劃, In-Stroke), and Ganhaek (間劃, Between Strokes)—offer different perspectives on the evolving relationships between strokes.
The artist describes the paintings as "little children," each holding the potential to grow and evolve through the viewer's experiences and imagination. Each work exists simultaneously as a mark already made and as a possibility yet to be realized. Within the openness of the unknown, every new stroke unfolds further possibilities, opening pathways to worlds yet to be discovered.
