비디갤러리에서는 08월 06일부터 08월 27일까지 김경한, 전희경, 홍순용 작가의 초대 3인전인 <색과 선, 그리고 우연적 의미에 대하여>를 진행한다.
김경한 작가는 형상이 사라지고 흔적도 지워져서 보이지는 않지만, 여전히 존재하는 실제적 세계의 모습을 담아내기 위해 주위를 관찰한다. 일상을 주의 깊게 관찰하다 보면 가끔은 그곳에서 예상치 못한 대상과 장면들을 만나게 된다. 작가에게는 대상을 반복적으로 마주하며 그것이 무엇을 들려주는지를 알아가는 과정이 작업에서 가장 중요한 시간이다. 대상으로부터 시작된 이야기를 옮겨오는 과정에서 이미 자리하고 있는 관념적인 생각들이 대상이 말할 기회를 방해하지 않기 위해 작가는 최대한 청자로서의 입장을 유지한다. 그 과정은 ‘알고 있다’ 그리고 ‘보고 있다’ 라는 결론을 예단해 버릴 수 있는 생각을 끊임없이 경계하며, 마치 작업이 시작되기 전 빈 여백의 캔버스 화면을 준비하는 것과 동일한 것이다. 아울러 움직임이 사라진 공간과 침묵하는 시간과의 동행 속에서 그럼에도 멈추지 않고 계속해서 자라나는 것들이 있다. 남겨진 자리에는 축적된 다른 풍경들이 교차하며 새로운 이미지들을 만들어 내기도 한다. 작가는 보여지는 순간의 이미지나 시간과 현상에 제한받지 않고 계속해서 커져 나가는 요소들을 발견하여 회화적인 조형 언어로 표현한다.
전희경 작가는 전통적인 한국 산수화의 영감을 받아 현대적인 추상미술 스타일로 형태를 재해석한다. 작가가 ‘산수화(山水畵)’를 말할 때, 산과 물의 경치를 그린 작품을 가리키기도 하지만, 빛, 바람, 기후 등이 색채로 뒤섞인 관념적인 개념을 표현하기 위해 ‘풍경화’와 다른 지점의 단어로서 산수화를 사용하고 있기도 하다. 이 산수화는 전통과 현대, 추상과 실재, 감정과 현실을 결합하여 독특하고 미묘하게 아름다운 작가 내면의 풍경을 시각화한다. 작가의 말을 옮기면 “산과 물, 구름과 안개, 폭포와 파도 등 자연의 이미지를 가지고 색과 터치, 물감의 물성 등을 나만의 조형 요소로 표현” 한다. 이 작업 과정이 독특한데, 천연 스펀지인 해면으로 물감을 쌓아 올리는 중에 흥미로운 자동기술법에 작가만의 행위가 포함된 액션페인팅이 더해진다. 작가가 의도한 바대로 붓이 화면을 채우는 것이 아니라 무의식적으로 물감이 덧입혀지고, 물감들은 해면 안에서 서로 섞인다. 이 색들이 화면에 달라붙는 과정에 작가의 힘 조절이 중요해지고, 이는 추상표현주의 작가들이 사용한 액션페인팅 방식과 궤를 같이한다. 이나연(미술평론가, 독립기획자)
홍순용 작가는 균형과 조화 속에서 시간과 삶의 본질적 연결점을 탐구한다. 단순하고 유연한 삶에 대한 동경을 담아 균형의 중심을 유지하려는 움직임에 주목하며, 우리는 앞으로 어떤 방향으로 무엇을 위해 존재할 수 있을지에 대한 질문을 던진다. <The inside space> 연작은 내면의 공간을 자연의 원초적 형태로 재해석한 작업으로, 균형의 시작은 내면의 고요한 심연에서 비롯된다는 점을 시사한다. 산과 바다, 자연의 색이 어우러진 푸르른 배경 위에 오직 흰색만을 덧칠하여 순수하고 결백한 공간을 구현한다. 동양의 여백과 서양의 조형언어를 교차하며, 숭고함이 깃든 자연의 정제된 장면을 통해 우리의 내면을 들여다볼 수 있는 정화의 시간을 형성한다. <The Move in Balance> 연작은 자연의 색을 두 방향의 축으로 겹겹이 쌓고 이를 다시 흩트리는 과정을 반복하여, 경계와 비경계 사이에 존재하는 시공간의 중첩된 모습을 시각화한다. 그리고 여기에 우리의 삶을 상징하는 장단의 선들을 조응하듯 화면을 채워간다. 이는 존재와 관계에 대한 사유의 흔적이자 성찰의 언어가 되어, 이전 선이 질문이면 다음 선이 응답이 되는 내적 대화를 이끌어낸다.
VIDI Gallery presents the invitational group exhibition On Color, Line, and the Accidental Meaning, featuring artists Kyunghan Kim, Heekyoung Jeon, and Soonyong Hong, on view from August 6 to August 27.
Kyunghan Kim observes his surroundings to capture the real world—not in its visible form, but in what has vanished and left no trace, yet still exists. Through close attention to everyday scenes, unexpected encounters with subjects and moments arise. For the artist, the repeated act of facing these subjects and listening to what they reveal is the most vital part of his practice. In translating these subject-born narratives, Kim consciously refrains from letting preconceived notions interfere, maintaining the position of a listener rather than a speaker. This approach requires constant vigilance against assumptions such as "I know" or "I see"—akin to preparing a blank canvas before a painting begins. Within these still spaces and silent times, something quietly continues to grow. Residual places often evolve into overlapping landscapes, generating new images. Rather than being confined by the visual moment or temporal phenomenon, Kim seeks out and expresses ever-expanding elements in his own painterly language.
Heekyoung Jeon reinterprets the traditional Korean genre of sansuhwa (landscape painting) through a contemporary abstract lens. When Jeon speaks of sansuhwa, she not only refers to paintings of mountains and rivers but also employs the term to convey conceptual landscapes—where light, wind, and atmosphere blend into color. Her landscapes merge tradition and modernity, abstraction and reality, emotion and the tangible world, visualizing her own subtle inner terrain. In the artist’s words, “I express images of nature—mountains and water, clouds and mist, waterfalls and waves—using color, brushstrokes, and the physicality of paint as my own formal elements.” Her process is distinctive: using natural sea sponges, she layers paint while incorporating a unique form of action painting that blends conscious intent with spontaneous gesture. Rather than directing the brush, the paint is applied almost unconsciously, mixing within the sponge before transferring to the canvas. The degree of pressure applied becomes essential, echoing the techniques of Abstract Expressionist artists.

Soonyong Hong explores essential connections between time and life through a pursuit of balance and harmony. His works reflect a longing for simplicity and fluidity, focusing on gestures that seek equilibrium—asking what direction we may move toward and for what purpose. In the series The Inside Space, Hong reinterprets internal space through primordial forms of nature, suggesting that balance begins in the quiet depths of the self. Layering pure white atop lush backgrounds evoking mountains, oceans, and natural hues, he constructs a space of purity and innocence. By weaving together Eastern notions of void (yohak) with Western visual language, he offers moments of contemplation—refined scenes of nature imbued with sublimity that invite reflection and emotional cleansing. In The Move in Balance series, natural colors are layered along dual axes and then disrupted, visualizing overlapping realms that exist between borders and borderlessness. Lines of rhythm, symbolizing the cadence of life, traverse the canvas in resonance. These marks become meditative traces of thought—lines of inquiry and response that unfold as an inner dialogue.
