비디갤러리에서는 10월 18일부터 11월 08일까지 아트놈, 조규훈, 지미한, 홍태양 작가의 4인전인 <Between You and Me>를 진행한다. 현실과 상상이 맞닿은 지점에서, 4인의 작가는 각자의 시선으로 인간과 세계를 탐구한다. 특별한 상상과 따뜻한 기억, 그리고 존재에 대한 질문이 섞이며, 익숙하지만 낯선 장면이 화면에 탄생하게 된다. 이들의 작품 속 캐릭터는 허구처럼 보이지만, 결국 우리 자신을 비추는 또 하나의 상징이 된다. 서로 다른 세계관이 한 공간에 공존하며, 그 안의 진실한 감정과 이야기들이 관람자를 새로운 차원의 경험으로 이끈다.
아트놈 작가는 세상의 재미없고 정적인 사고들을 멀리하며, 동적인 변화를 추구한다. 복잡한 현대 사회 속에서 더욱 순수하고, 가볍고, 재미있는 것을 찾아가는 과정이기도 하다. 작가의 작업에는 만화적인 캐릭터들이 등장한다. 작가명인 “아트놈”이란 이름을 갖고 있는 아저씨 캐릭터와 토끼 소녀 ”가지”, 그리고 말썽꾸러기 강아지 “모타루”가 주인공으로 나온다. 이러한 캐릭터 작업의 원천은 바로 만화 형식에 있다. 작가는 이들 캐릭터를 표현하고, 이들은 작가(또는 우리)를 표현한다. 가상이면서 실제로 존재하는 것이다. 가장 소중한 것은 멀리서 찾는 것이 아닌, 바로 가까이에 있는 사람들에게서 찾는 것으로, 작가는 이들이 원하는 꿈을 그려가고 있다.
조규훈 작가는 얼굴을 가린 아이들을 그린다. 얼굴을 가린다는 건 단순히 숨는 것이 아니라, 감정을 드러내는 또 다른 방식이다. 표정이 보이지 않아도 색감, 몸짓, 작은 사물들이 그 마음을 대신 이야기한다. 작품 속 아이들은 때로는 대중적인 아이콘과 함께 일상 속 풍경에 등장한다. 작가는 익숙하면서도 낯선 모습으로, 감상자가 스스로의 감정을 떠올릴 수 있는 장면을 구성하여, 그 안에서 작은 위로와 따뜻함을 전한다. 아울러 표정은 감정을 말해주는 중요한 도구이기 때문에, 표정을 감춘 인물로 하여금 감정의 여백이 생기고, 그 여백을 통해 감상자들은 자신의 이야기를 대입하여 잊고 있던 기억과 추억을 떠올리게 된다.
지미한 작가에게 있어 학창시절 라디오에서 흘러나왔던 익숙한 멜로디의 팝송들, 지금도 일상 속에서 자주 듣는 음악들과 추억들은 작품의 훌륭한 소재가 된다. 이러한 음악들과 그 시절의 추억과 감성, 곡에 대한 에피소드 등을 탐닉하여 작품으로 표현한다. 우리의 마음속에 지금도 살아 숨 쉬는 음악처럼, 작가는 그림들을 통하여 그때 그 시절의 기억들도 사라지지 않고 계속해서 이어져 가기를 바라는 마음을 담아낸다. 그 중 ‘Oldies But Goodies’ 시리즈는 일상에서 떠오르는 좋아했던 추억들(영화, 음악, TV 프로그램, 당시 유행했던 로고, 광고, 게임, 기호 등)을 꺼내어 나온 결과들을 캔버스에 옮긴 작업이다. 이와 같이 대중적으로 익숙한 소재를 통해 작가는 관람객들과 함께 추억하고, 소통하고 있다.
홍태양 작가의 작업 주제인 ‘이옴테이오(iomteiot)’는 프랑스어 toi et moi(너와 나)를 거꾸로 배열한 단어이다. 이 작업은 인류의 기원을 유인원에서 상상하며 시작된다. 태초부터 함께 존재해온 그들을 시간의 경계를 넘어 오늘의 세계로 불러오면서, 우리는 결국 우리 자신을 되돌아보게 된다. 그들의 여정은 과거에서 미래로 이어지는 단순한 시간 여행이 아니라, 인간이 누구인지, 왜 존재하는지, 그리고 왜 함께 살아가야 하는지를 묻는 근본적인 탐구의 과정이다. 작가는 이 시리즈에서 최초의 인간을 오늘의 사회에 위치시키고, 그들의 시선으로 우리의 문명과 일상을 관찰하게 하였다. 캔버스 위의 유인원은 허구적 상상의 산물이 아니라, 인간이라는 존재를 비추는 거울이자 우리를 이해하기 위한 또 하나의 언어가 된다.
From this October 18 to November 8, Vidi Gallery presents Between You and Me, a group exhibition featuring four artists — Art Nom, Cho Gyu-hun, Jymmi Han, and Hong Taeyang.
At the intersection of reality and imagination, each artist explores the relationship between human beings and the world through their own distinct lens. Blending vivid imagination with tender memories and existential questions, they create scenes that feel both familiar and strangely new. The characters within their works, though seemingly fictional, become symbolic reflections of ourselves. Within this shared space, their diverse worldviews coexist, inviting viewers into an emotionally resonant and multidimensional experience.
Art Nom seeks to move away from the dull, static patterns of thought that dominate the modern world, pursuing instead a dynamic and playful spirit. His work represents a journey toward purity, lightness, and joy amidst the complexity of contemporary life. His universe is inhabited by comic-inspired characters: the “Art Nom” gentleman, the rabbit girl “Gaji,” and the mischievous dog “Motaru.” Rooted in the format of comics, these characters are both representations of the artist and of ourselves — simultaneously fictional and real. Art Nom’s works remind us that what matters most is not far away but found in the people close to us, as he paints the dreams that they—and we—hope to realize.
Cho Gyu-hun paints children with their faces concealed. This gesture is not simply an act of hiding but another way of expressing emotion. Even without facial expressions, colors, gestures, and surrounding objects convey the inner stories of his figures. Often appearing alongside familiar cultural icons within everyday settings, his works evoke a gentle sense of empathy and comfort. By obscuring the face—the most direct tool for expressing emotion—the artist opens up a space of emotional ambiguity. In that quiet gap, viewers are invited to project their own feelings, recalling forgotten memories and personal reflections.
For Jymmi Han, the pop songs that filled the airwaves during his school days remain a wellspring of inspiration. He transforms those melodies and memories—along with episodes tied to particular songs—into visual narratives. His paintings carry the wish that, like the timeless songs that continue to live within us, the memories of those moments will never fade. In his Oldies But Goodies series, Han revisits cherished fragments from daily life—films, music, TV programs, logos, advertisements, games, and trends of the past—translating them onto canvas. Through these familiar cultural motifs, he invites viewers to remember, to connect, and to share in collective nostalgia.
Hong Tae-yang’s ongoing project iomteiot—a reversal of the French phrase toi et moi (“you and me”)—begins with an imaginative return to humanity’s origins among the apes. By bringing these primordial beings across temporal boundaries into the present day, the artist prompts reflection on what it means to be human. Their journey is not a simple time travel from past to future, but a deeper inquiry into who we are, why we exist, and how we live together. In positioning these “first humans” within modern society, Hong encourages us to see our own civilization through their eyes. The apes on his canvases, though born of imagination, function as mirrors of humanity—another language through which we might understand ourselves.
